Can I drive my Ford while software is updating?

Learn how to safely manage Ford SYNC software updates while driving. This guide explains when you can drive and when parking is required for SYNC 4A, SYNC 3, and older versions, ensuring a smooth and safe update process for your vehicle.

For SYNC® 4A Software Updates:

  • Some updates can proceed while you are driving your vehicle.
  • However, certain updates necessitate that your vehicle remains off during the process. While most updates complete within minutes, some may take longer. You should schedule these updates during periods when driving is not required, such as overnight.

For SYNC 3 and Earlier Versions:

  • If updating via Wi-Fi, you may continue to drive and use SYNC during the update.
  • If using a flash drive, your vehicle must be parked when you initiate the update installation. Ensure your vehicle is in a well-ventilated area, as it must remain running until the update is complete. Once the download process begins, you may then drive your vehicle.

Important Considerations:

  • Do not operate your device while driving; utilize voice commands whenever possible.
  • Avoid using mobile devices while driving. Certain features may be locked when your vehicle is in gear, and some functionalities may not be available with all phone models.
  • Always consult your in-vehicle screen or the FordPass App for the most accurate estimated update time.
