How to check and refill engine coolant?

The cooling system is vital for regulating engine temperature and preventing overheating. Regularly checking the coolant level to ensure it remains within the appropriate range will help prevent severe engine damage and ensure your Ford vehicle is ready for every journey.

1. Checking the Coolant Level

To obtain the most accurate and safest reading, follow these guidelines:

  • Check while the engine is cold: You should check the coolant level only when the engine has completely cooled down.
  • Correct level position: Observe the coolant reservoir; the fluid level should be between the Minimum (MIN) and Maximum (MAX) marks.
  • Note: When the engine is hot, the coolant expands, which may cause the level to rise slightly above the MAX mark; this is normal. However, if the level is at or below the MIN mark while the engine is cold, refill the coolant immediately.

2. Steps to Correctly Refill Coolant

  • Loosen the cap carefully: Slowly unscrew the reservoir cap to allow internal pressure to vent gradually before removing the cap entirely.
  • Refill the coolant: Add pre-diluted coolant that meets Ford specifications until it reaches the appropriate level.
    • Note: Reusing old coolant that has been drained from the system is not recommended.
  • Close the cap securely: Turn the cap clockwise until it is fully seated and hits the stop.
  • Re-check: After driving the vehicle 2–3 more times, check the level in the reservoir again. If the level has dropped, refill it following the steps above.

Precautions and Emergency Situations

  • Signs of abnormality: If you find that you need to add more than 1L of coolant per month, the system may have a leak. Bring your vehicle to a Ford service center for an inspection as soon as possible.
  • Dangers of using plain water: Using plain water alone without coolant additives will cause internal engine corrosion, scale buildup, and may lead to overheating and engine damage.
  • Emergency situations: If the coolant runs completely dry while you are traveling, you may add a large amount of water to enable the vehicle to reach the nearest service center. However, you must promptly have the system serviced to drain the water and refill it with the correct coolant.
