How do I check and add engine oil?

Checking the Engine Oil Level

Follow these steps to accurately check your engine oil level:

  1. Park on level ground:
Ensure your vehicle is parked on a level surface.
  2. Check when cold or after waiting:
    1. Check the oil level before starting the engine.
    2. If the engine has been running, switch it off after it has reached operating temperature and wait at least 15 minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.
Note: Checking the oil level too soon after the engine has been running can result in an inaccurate reading.
  3. Locate and wipe dipstick: Remove the engine oil dipstick and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth.
  4. Reinsert dipstick: Fully reinsert the dipstick, ensuring it is seated correctly.
  5. Remove and read: Remove the dipstick again and check the oil level.
    1. Read both sides of the dipstick and use the lower mark as the correct reading.
    2. If the oil level is between the maximum and minimum marks, the level is acceptable. Do not add oil.
    3. If the oil level is at or below the minimum mark, you should add engine oil immediately.

Important notes regarding oil level:

  • The normal oil consumption rate for new engines is typically reached after approximately 5,000 kms.
  • The oil level may appear higher than expected due to frequent short trips that don't allow the engine to reach operating temperature, or from extended periods of idling or low-speed driving.

If you consistently observe oil levels above the maximum mark, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Adding Engine Oil

Follow these steps to add engine oil:

  1. Clean filler cap area: Clean the area around the engine oil filler cap before removing it to prevent contaminants from entering the engine.
  2. Remove filler cap: Remove the engine oil filler cap.
  3. Add recommended oil: Add engine oil that meets the recommended specification for your vehicle (refer to your owner's manual if unsure).
  4. Reinstall filler cap: Reinstall the engine oil filler cap and turn it clockwise until you feel a strong resistance, ensuring it is securely tightened.
    1. Do not add oil above the maximum mark on the dipstick. Overfilling can lead to engine damage.
    2. Immediately clean up any spilled oil with an absorbent cloth to prevent damage to engine components or the environment.

For specific information on your vehicle, refer to your Owner's Manual.
