Vision for the FUTURE

Ford Thailand fully supports Thailand's National Ethanol Policy. We believe that the Thai government's call to promote ethanol as the future energy solution for Thailand is the RIGHT strategy.

Benefits of Ethanol

Economic & Energy Independence
Thailand's trade deficit hit large amount of oil imports. The government set the National Ethanol Policy to reduce the use of Bensin and Diesel. Reducing imports of crude oil improves trade balance and makes Thailand more self-sufficient in energy supply. Economy is insulated from global price hikes and fluctuations.

Agricultural & Rural Development
Ethanol is produced from farmed crops such as sugar cane or cassava. No need top quality soil nor extensive irrigation. Can choose crop to suit local conditions.

Environment
If everyone in Thailand switched to ethanol fuel, there will be 30% lower emission. Contributes to cleaner air and improved air quality. Reduces greenhouse gas emissions in Bangkok

Automotive Growth

  • Thailand has the potential to become the regional automotive hub in development of ethanol technology, in line with its vision to become the "Detroit of Asia".
  • The National Ethanol Policy should provide incentives to attract automakers to develop and build ethanol-compatible engines in Thailand.
  • Asia's Leader in Ethanol Technology

Ford and Global FFV Experience

Over the past 14 years, Ford has put more than ONE MILLION ethanol vehicles on the road in North America, Brazil and Sweden:

  • E20 technology
  • E40 - E85 (Flexible Fuel Vehicles) technology

Success Story of Ethanol in Brazil

Case Study: Brazil's Ethanol Policy

1975 : The National Ethanol Program was adopted. To reduce external dependence on petroleum. Produce renewable and environmentally friendly energy
1979 : Ethanol-powered automobiles and commercial vehicles are manufactured.
1985 : 1990 : About 90% of all automobiles manufactured in the country are powered by ethanol.
2003 : Introduction of FFV (Flexible Fuel Vehicles) that can run off gasoline or ethanol.
2004 : More than 328,000 FFV were sold (significant share increase).

  • 6 million ethanol vehicles sold to date.
  • Created 640,000 direct jobs and millions of indirect jobs, mainly in rural areas.
  • Brazil's Alcohol Policy offers consumers the following advantages :
    • Fewer taxes (governmental and road taxes) than gasoline cars.
    • Lower price (- 43%) for alcohol than gasoline, at the present moment. Historically, alcohol prices have always been between 30% and 40% less than gasoline prices.
